Description
Known as the “Kakadu of the South,” Gunbower Island is a spectacular natural wonder covering 26,400 hectares and stretching over 50 kilometres between the Murray River and Gunbower Creek. Made up of Gunbower State Forest and Gunbower National Park, this internationally recognised RAMSAR wetland is a living mosaic of river red gum forests, winding creeks, and shimmering wetlands, home to abundant wildlife and breathtaking landscapes.

Paddle the waterways – Launch right in Gunbower from the all-abilities pontoon and explore by canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard. The Gunbower Island Canoe Trail is one of the many options for a peaceful adventure along the creeks and wetlands.

Gunbower Island Forest Drive – Start at the Gateway to Gannawarra Visitor Centre in Cohuna and cruise the scenic drive to spot kangaroos grazing in sunlit clearings, koalas resting in towering gums and flocks of vibrant waterbirds across the wetlands.

Free camping – Set up tents, caravans or RVs at tranquil spots beside the river and fall asleep to the gentle sounds of nature.

Fishing – Try your luck in the Murray River or Gunbower Creek, surrounded by picturesque bushland.
